An oriental rug being washed on an automatic rug cleaning machine at our facility

A hand-knotted rug is not a piece of carpet that happens to be loose. It has natural dyes, a cotton or wool foundation, hand-tied fringe, and often decades of dry soil packed into the base of the pile. Cleaning it in your living room with the same wand used on wall-to-wall risks dye bleed, brown-out on the cotton foundation, and soil left sitting in the bottom third of the pile.

So we take rugs with us. They are inspected and photographed at pickup, dusted, tested for colorfastness, washed, rinsed, dried flat under controlled airflow, groomed, and delivered back to your home in Hewlett usually within a week.

What happens between pickup and delivery

  • Inspection. We note existing wear, moth damage, pet staining, dry rot in the foundation and any prior repairs, and show you before the rug leaves.
  • Dusting. Dry particulate is vibrated out of the back of the rug first. A large wool rug can release a startling amount of grit at this stage, and none of it would have come out with water alone.
  • Colorfast and fiber testing. Every color field is tested. Reds and indigos in older tribal rugs are the usual risk.
  • Washing. The rug is washed with fiber-appropriate solution, agitated gently and rinsed thoroughly.
  • Controlled drying. Dried flat with airflow, never hung wet over a rail where water pulls dye downward.
  • Fringe, grooming and final inspection before it is wrapped and returned.

Wool, silk, viscose and the ones that need caution

Wool is durable and cleans beautifully, but it hates high alkalinity and excessive heat, both of which cause felting and dulling. Silk is cleaned cool with minimal moisture and dried quickly. Cotton flatweaves and dhurries bleed more often than people expect and are handled accordingly.

The fiber that causes the most heartbreak is viscose, sold as art silk, banana silk, bamboo silk or rayon. It is wood pulp. It loses strength when wet, yellows easily, and develops permanent texture change from a spilled glass of water long before anyone calls a cleaner. We can clean viscose rugs carefully with low moisture, but we will set honest expectations first — a viscose rug never returns to showroom condition.

Pet accidents in area rugs

Urine is the most common reason a rug comes to us, and it is exactly the case where in-plant work matters. Urine salts sit in the foundation and reactivate with humidity, and no amount of surface cleaning in your living room reaches them. A full immersion wash flushes the contamination all the way through the rug rather than pushing it around.

Be aware of what urine does chemically: it can move dye. If a cat has been using the same corner of a Persian rug for a year, that area may show color change once cleaned. The odor will be gone. The dye migration may not be, and we identify those areas during inspection so nothing is a surprise.

How rug cleaning is priced

Rugs are priced by square foot, with the rate set by fiber and construction rather than by how dirty the rug is. Machine-made synthetics sit at the low end. Hand-knotted wool is in the middle. Silk and antique pieces are handled most conservatively and priced accordingly, because the labor is slower and the margin for error is smaller.

Pickup, inspection, dusting, washing, drying, grooming and delivery are all inside that number. Urine decontamination is quoted separately when it is needed, since a rug requiring full flushing takes considerably more time and water than a normal wash — and burying that cost in a flat rate would mean every other customer subsidising it.

Why we do not quote over the phone

A photo gets you a range. The rug in front of us gets you a number. Fiber, foundation, dye stability and hidden damage all affect the method, and none of them are visible in a picture taken from standing height.

Pickup and delivery across the Five Towns

Pickup and delivery are included for Hewlett, Hewlett Harbor, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Inwood and the surrounding Nassau towns. Turnaround is normally five to seven days depending on the size of the rug and how long it takes to dry properly. Rush service is available when someone is hosting.

If the rug sits over wall-to-wall, it is worth doing the carpet at the same visit — the floor under a rug is always cleaner than the traffic around it, and the difference shows once the rug goes back. Ask about a rug pad while yours is out. A proper pad keeps the rug from sliding on hardwood, absorbs impact so the foundation lasts longer, and lets air move underneath instead of trapping moisture against the floor.

Area Rug Cleaning Questions

Do you clean rugs in my home or take them away?
Wool, silk and hand-knotted rugs are picked up and washed at our facility, because dusting and full rinsing cannot be done properly in a living room. Synthetic machine-made rugs that are in reasonable condition can often be cleaned on site if you prefer.
How long will my rug be gone?
Usually five to seven days. Drying is the part that cannot be rushed without damaging the rug, so heavily soiled or very large pieces sometimes take longer. If you need it back for an event, tell us at pickup and we will work to that date.
Will the colors run?
We test every color field for colorfastness before washing and adjust the method to what the rug tolerates. Older vegetable-dyed and tribal rugs get the most conservative treatment. If a rug shows a real bleeding risk, we discuss it with you before proceeding.
Can you clean the fringe without damaging it?
Yes. Fringe is the foundation of the rug extending past the pile, so it is cleaned by hand with gentle agitation rather than aggressive brushing. If fringe is already frayed or missing, we can refer you for repair.
How often should an area rug be cleaned?
Every one to two years in a normal living area, annually if it sits in an entry, under a dining table, or in a home with pets. Between cleanings, vacuum both sides a few times a year — grit that settles into the foundation is what wears a rug out from the inside.
Do you clean viscose or art silk rugs?
We do, with low moisture and careful handling. Viscose is wood pulp and permanently changes texture when wet, so we set expectations honestly first. Any cleaner promising a viscose rug will look new again is not being straight with you.
