Graphene coatings are ceramic coatings with graphene oxide added to the formula. They install the same way, need the same preparation, and protect against the same things. The differences are in behavior: graphene formulas typically produce a slicker surface, run cooler because the coating disperses heat rather than holding it, and show noticeably less water spotting.
That last point is the practical reason we recommend them for cars parked outside in the Five Towns. Between lawn sprinklers, salt air and summer rain, water spotting is the most common complaint from owners of coated cars around here.
Honest framing: the difference is real but incremental, not transformational. Both are far beyond wax. Both need identical prep. The marketing language around graphene is louder than the performance gap.
Graphene makes more sense for a car that sits outside, especially near sprinklers or the water, on dark paint where water spots show badly, and for owners who want the slickest possible surface.
Standard ceramic is fine for a garage-kept vehicle or where budget is the deciding factor. Choosing ceramic over graphene is not a mistake.
The same rule applies as with any coating: it locks in what is underneath. Wash, iron and tar decontamination, clay, paint correction, then a solvent panel wipe so the coating bonds to bare clear coat rather than to polishing oils. Then application panel by panel, leveled at the right time, and left to cure before the car gets wet.
The coating chemistry is the small part of the price. The hours of correction before it are the real cost, and they are what determines whether you like the result.
Water sheets off rather than sitting in beads that dry into spots. Bugs, sap and bird droppings release with far less effort, though they still need removing promptly — acidic bird droppings baking in sun on a hot panel will etch through any coating eventually. Washing takes noticeably less time because dirt has little to hold.
Maintenance is identical to ceramic: pH-neutral soap, two buckets, no brush washes, no wax layered on top.
