Road tar, tree sap and bug splatter dissolved off the paint before their acids etch the clear coat.
Three different contaminants, one shared characteristic: all of them are acidic or solvent-based, all of them bond hard to clear coat, and all of them cause permanent etching if left through summer heat. A bug splattered on a hot bumper in July can etch the clear coat in a matter of days.
None of them come off in a wash, and all of them get worse with scrubbing. Each needs the right solvent, enough dwell time to soften, and then a gentle lift — not force.
Picked up from fresh asphalt and hot summer roads, mostly along the rocker panels, behind the wheels and on the lower doors. It is petroleum-based, so it dissolves with a dedicated tar remover, applied and given time to work before wiping. Tar that has been baked on all summer sometimes needs two applications.
Because tar removers are solvents, they strip wax and sealant from the area, so anything treated needs re-protecting afterward.
The Five Towns are full of mature oaks, maples and pines, and anyone parking under them deals with sap. It hardens into a clear amber bead that etches a ring into the clear coat as it sits. Fresh sap wipes off with a dedicated remover. Hardened sap needs the solvent to dwell and soften before any pressure, and if a ring remains after removal, that is etching and it needs polishing.
The pine sap that hardens like glass is the most stubborn and often needs repeated applications rather than force.
Insect remains are acidic and start working on the clear coat immediately, particularly on a hot front bumper. Long Island summer evenings on the Southern State or Sunrise Highway will load a front end quickly. A bug remover with dwell time softens the residue so it releases without scrubbing.
The practical advice: get bugs off within a few days in summer, not at the end of the month. And a protected front end — sealant, coating or paint protection film — makes them release far more easily next time, which is a real reason to protect the front of a car that sees highway miles.
