Detailing a high-value car is less about doing more and more about doing less damage. The materials are less forgiving, the paint is often softer, the interiors use Alcantara and unfinished leathers that standard products ruin, and the cost of a mistake is measured in thousands rather than an apology.

We work conservatively on these vehicles: test first, use the least aggressive method that achieves the result, and stop before pushing further for marginal gain.

Soft paint changes the approach

Several German and Italian manufacturers use notably soft clear coat. It marrs easily, which is why these cars accumulate swirl marks so quickly, and it also means aggressive compounding is unnecessary and risky — a softer clear responds to a much lighter pad and polish combination.

Getting that wrong in either direction is a problem. Too aggressive removes more clear than needed on a car whose paint you cannot easily replace. Too light and the defects stay. Paint depth readings and a test section are non-negotiable on these vehicles, and we document the readings.

Interior materials that need specific handling

Alcantara and microsuede on steering wheels, seat inserts and headliners — cleaned damp with a soft brush worked in one direction and the nap lifted, never scrubbed with standard cleaner, which mats it permanently.

Unfinished and semi-aniline leather found in higher-end interiors, which absorbs anything applied and cannot be treated like coated automotive leather.

Carbon fiber trim, piano black and open-pore wood, all of which scratch easily and need different products from standard plastics.

Contrast stitching and perforated leather, where cleaner pooling in the perforations gets into the seat foam.

Protection and discretion

Paint protection film on the leading edges plus a ceramic coating over the vehicle is the standard combination on a car being kept, and it is what preserves value. Wheels and glass are usually coated as well.
