Water spots come from minerals, not water. When droplets from a sprinkler, a hose, or rain running off a building dry on the surface, the water evaporates and leaves the dissolved calcium and magnesium behind as a ring. Nassau County water is mineral-heavy, so lawn sprinkler overspray is the single most common cause we see across the Five Towns.
Left alone, and especially baked in summer sun on a hot panel, those deposits go from sitting on the surface to etching into the clear coat — a physical crater rather than a stain. At that point washing accomplishes nothing, no matter how hard you scrub.
Stage one: fresh mineral deposits. Still sitting on top of the paint. A dedicated mineral remover dissolves them and they wipe away. Fast and inexpensive.
Stage two: bonded deposits. Chemical treatment plus clay, sometimes with a light polish. Most sprinkler spotting that has been there a few months falls here.
Stage three: etched spots. The mineral has eaten into the clear coat and left a depression. Chemistry does nothing at this point — the only fix is machine polishing to level the clear coat around it, which is paint correction work. Deep etching that has gone through the clear cannot be removed at all.

Water spots on glass are often more visible than on paint and are especially bad on the driver's side where sprinklers hit. Glass takes a different approach — a dedicated mineral remover and, for bonded deposits, a glass polish with a machine. Left long enough, mineral spotting etches glass too, and etched glass cannot be restored, only replaced.
After cleaning, a hydrophobic glass coating makes future spotting far less likely to bond and dramatically improves visibility in rain.
Adjust sprinkler heads so they do not hit the driveway or the car — that one change solves the problem for most Hewlett homeowners permanently. Do not let the car air dry in the sun after a wash. Dry it, including the mirrors and trim gaps where water hides and runs out later.
A ceramic or graphene coating helps significantly, since water sheets off rather than sitting in beads, and any deposits that do form sit on the coating instead of etching the paint.
