Machine polishing that removes defects from the clear coat instead of filling them — measured and done properly.
Paint correction is the removal of a microscopic layer of clear coat to level the surface around a defect. Swirls, light scratches, oxidation, water spot etching and holograms are all valleys in an otherwise flat surface, and they look dull because they scatter light instead of reflecting it. Level the surface and the gloss comes back — genuinely, not with a filler that washes out in a month.
It is also the one detailing service with real risk attached, because clear coat is finite. A factory panel has only so many microns of it, and once it is gone the paint fails and the panel needs repainting. That is why measurement comes before machinery.
One-stage polish removes maybe 50 to 70 percent of defects and adds significant gloss in a single pass. It is the right choice for most daily drivers and by far the best value.
Two-stage correction uses a cutting pass followed by a refining pass and clears most defects. This is the usual choice for a car you care about or one being prepared for sale.
Multi-stage correction chases near-perfection, involves the most clear coat removal and the most hours, and makes sense on high-value or show vehicles. It is not the right spend on a leased commuter.
If a scratch catches your fingernail, it is through the clear coat and polishing will not remove it — it can only soften the edges. Deep scratches into the primer or metal, stone chips, and cracked or peeling clear coat are body shop work. Paint that has already failed and gone chalky on a roof or hood cannot be polished back; that panel needs repainting.
We tell you all of this after measuring, before starting. A detailer who promises to polish out everything without looking at paint depth is either guessing or willing to sand through your clear coat.
