Overspray is what happens when someone else's work lands on your car. A neighbor spray painting a fence, a contractor doing a roof three houses down, a parking garage being repainted, a road crew with a line striper, or industrial fallout drifting on the wind. You come out to a car that feels rough all over and has a dull cast, and washing changes nothing.
It is a genuinely fixable problem, but it needs the right approach. Aggressive scrubbing or a razor blade in the wrong hands does more damage than the overspray did.
The car is washed thoroughly first, then we assess how far the overspray has cured and what it actually is — latex, enamel, lacquer, roofing tar and concrete spatter all behave differently.
Clay is the primary tool for most paint mist. With heavy lubrication, the clay shears the cured droplets off the surface without abrading the clear coat. Heavier or more stubborn contamination may need a chemical step first, or a light machine polish afterward if the overspray has bonded firmly enough to leave marks when it releases.
Glass and trim are handled separately. Glass tolerates a plastic blade with proper lubrication where paint would not. Textured plastic trim is the most difficult surface, because droplets settle into the texture and clay cannot reach in.
If a contractor or a business caused the overspray, they or their insurer are typically responsible. Photograph the vehicle before anything is touched, including close-ups in direct sunlight where the mist is visible. Get the contractor's information and the date. Do not try to clean it yourself before documenting it, and do not let the responsible party's handyman have a go with a scouring pad. We have corrected the aftermath of that more than once, and it converts a straightforward job into paint correction.
Fresh overspray that has not fully cured comes off far more easily. Left for months through sun and heat, the droplets bond harder and are more likely to leave marks in the clear coat when they finally release, which then needs polishing.
