Mold in a vehicle is always a water problem first. Something is letting water in, or something got in and never dried, and the enclosed cabin of a car parked in a Long Island summer is close to an ideal growth environment: warm, humid, dark, and full of organic material in the carpet and seat foam. Growth can start within 24 to 48 hours of moisture sitting.

Find the water first

The common sources, in roughly the order we find them: clogged sunroof drains, which back up and dump water down the A-pillar into the footwell; failed windshield or door seals; a leaking heater core, which leaves a greasy film on the inside of the windshield and a sweet smell; a plugged AC evaporator drain dripping onto the passenger carpet; a bad trunk or tail light seal filling the spare well; and windows left open in a storm.

We use a moisture meter to map how far the water actually traveled, which is almost always further than the visible area. On a flooded floor pan, water wicks up into the seat foam and along the sound deadening under the carpet.

Remediation

• Extraction of all standing and absorbed water from carpet, padding and seat foam.
• Removal of unsalvageable material where saturation is severe — padding and sound deadening sometimes have to come out rather than be dried in place.
• Antimicrobial treatment on all affected surfaces including the floor pan itself.
• HEPA vacuuming of surfaces to remove spores rather than redistributing them.
• Ventilation system treatment, since ductwork spreads spores every time the fan runs, and cabin air filter replacement.
• Controlled drying with air movers and monitoring until materials are genuinely dry, not just dry to the touch.

Health and honesty

Mold in a car matters more than mold in a room because you sit in a small sealed space breathing recirculated air. If anyone in the household has asthma or respiratory sensitivity, do not drive the vehicle with the fan on until it has been treated.

And the honest limit: a car that sat flooded for weeks with growth through the seat foam, into the sound deadening and up the interior panels may not be economically worth remediating.
