Air fresheners do not remove odor, they add a second smell on top of the first one. Real odor removal is a two-part job: physically remove the material producing the smell, then neutralize whatever molecules remain in the fabric, foam and ventilation system. Skipping the first part is why so many treatments last a week.

Almost every persistent car odor comes from one of a short list: spilled milk under a seat, a pet accident in the carpet, gym clothes left in the trunk, a mildewed cabin air filter, cigarettes, or water getting in through a clogged sunroof drain or a bad seal.

Step one: find and remove the source

We inspect under and behind the seats, lift carpet where necessary, check the cargo well and spare tire compartment, and look for moisture that should not be there. Spilled milk that has run down into the seat track or under the carpet is the single most common cause of a smell nobody can locate, and it will defeat any amount of ozone as long as it is still there.

Contaminated fabric is then extracted and treated. Where the smell is organic — urine, milk, vomit — we use an enzyme that digests the residue rather than masking it.

Step two: ozone or hydroxyl treatment

With the source gone, the vehicle is sealed and treated with an ozone generator. Ozone reaches everywhere air reaches, including the headliner, the foam inside the seats and the ductwork behind the dash, and it destroys odor molecules by oxidation rather than covering them.

Ozone requires the vehicle to be empty and unoccupied during treatment and aired out afterward, which is why it is scheduled with a window built in. Live plants, and any pets, must be out of the vehicle. For sensitive interiors, or when a vehicle needs to be back in use immediately, we use a hydroxyl treatment instead — slower, but safe to run around people and materials.

The cabin air filter and the vents

A neglected cabin air filter is a mildew farm sitting directly in the air path, and no interior cleaning fixes a smell coming from there. If yours has not been changed in a year or more, replace it as part of the job — it is a cheap part and it is often the entire problem. We also treat the ventilation system so the ducts are not reintroducing the smell every time the fan runs.
