Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a thin factory UV coating on the outside. Sunlight breaks that coating down over five to ten years, and once it fails the plastic underneath oxidizes: first hazy, then yellow, eventually brown and crazed. On Long Island the combination of summer sun and winter salt spray accelerates it.

This is not only about appearance. A clouded lens scatters light instead of projecting it down the road, and measured output can drop by more than half. That is a real difference on an unlit stretch of road at night, and it is also a common New York State inspection failure.

The process, and why the last step matters most

  • Mask the surrounding paint and trim so nothing gets touched.
  • Wet sand in stages, starting coarse enough to cut through the failed factory coating and the oxidized layer, then stepping finer through several grits.
  • Machine polish to remove the sanding marks and bring the lens back to optical clarity.
  • Clean and prep the surface.
  • Apply a new UV-resistant clear coat to the lens.

That final step is the whole game. Sanding and polishing alone makes a lens look excellent for a few months, then it yellows again faster than before — because the plastic is now completely bare to UV. Anyone restoring headlights without sealing them is selling you a short-term result. Toothpaste and off-the-shelf kits mostly fall into that category.

How long it lasts

With a proper UV clear coat, expect several years, and it is renewable when it eventually degrades. Without sealing, you are back to yellow within a season.

The job takes about an hour to ninety minutes for a pair, and it is one of the highest-impact things you can do to a ten-year-old car for the money. Clear lenses take years off the look of a front end.

When restoration will not work

Restoration works on the outside surface. If moisture is getting inside the housing — condensation, water pooling in the bottom, a cracked housing or failed seal — polishing the outside changes nothing, because the haze is internal. That needs a new assembly or a reseal.

Deep crazing, where the plastic has developed a network of fine cracks through its thickness, is also past saving. We will tell you before starting if replacement is the honest answer.

Headlight Restoration Questions

How long does headlight restoration last?
With a proper UV clear coat applied at the end, several years, and it can be renewed. Restorations done without sealing, including most DIY kits and toothpaste methods, yellow again within a few months and often faster than before.
Is this a safety issue or just cosmetic?
Both. A clouded lens scatters light rather than projecting it, and measured output can drop by more than half, which is a genuine difference on an unlit road at night. Badly hazed headlights are also a common New York State inspection failure.
Can you fix headlights that are foggy on the inside?
No. Internal condensation means moisture is entering the housing through a failed seal or crack, and polishing the outside does nothing for it. That needs the housing resealed or replaced, and we will tell you upfront.
How long does the job take?
About an hour to ninety minutes for a pair, including sanding stages, polishing and sealing. It is one of the biggest visual improvements available for the money on an older vehicle.
