Wiper haze and mineral deposits polished off, then a coating that sheds rain at speed and cuts night glare.
Windshield glass accumulates more than people realize: mineral deposits from sprinklers and rain, a film from wiper rubber and road grime, bonded contamination, and the fine haze that makes oncoming headlights flare into a starburst at night. Most drivers assume that glare is their eyes. Often it is the windshield.
Cleaning removes what sits on top. Polishing removes what is bonded into the surface, and a hydrophobic coating changes how the glass behaves in rain entirely — above about 40 miles an hour water lifts off on its own and the wipers become nearly unnecessary.
Machine polishing with a dedicated glass compound removes bonded mineral deposits, light wiper marks, water spot staining and the general haze that builds over years. The improvement at night is the part people notice most — less flare from oncoming headlights and less scatter from streetlights.
What it cannot remove: deep wiper scratches from a blade that ran on metal, stone chips, and cracks. Those are permanent, and a chip or crack in the driver's line of sight is a windshield replacement rather than a detailing job. Deep etching from long-standing mineral deposits also cannot be polished out entirely.
After the glass is decontaminated and polished, a hydrophobic coating is applied to the windshield and usually the side windows and mirrors. Rain beads tightly and lifts off with airflow at speed. Practically, that means better visibility in a downpour on the Southern State, less wiper use, easier ice and snow clearing in winter, and mineral deposits that are far less likely to bond next time.
Expect several months to a year depending on the product and how much highway driving the car does. It is renewable and inexpensive relative to what it changes about driving in bad weather.
New coating and old wipers is a mismatch. Hardened blades chatter across treated glass and wear the coating unevenly, so replace them if they are more than a year old. Clean the blades with alcohol every few weeks — most streaking blamed on wipers is road film on the rubber.
And clean the inside of the windshield. The interior haze from off-gassing plastics and hands on the glass is a major contributor to night glare, and it is included in our interior work.
