A hard, bonded layer over your clear coat that lasts years instead of months — and makes washing dramatically easier.
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, slick, semi-permanent layer. Unlike wax, which sits on top and washes away, a coating becomes the surface. Water sheets off it, salt and road film struggle to stick, UV cannot reach the paint the same way, and washing takes half the effort because dirt has far less to hold onto.
For a car parked outside in the Five Towns, salt air and sun are working on the paint every single day. A coating is the difference between the clear coat taking that or a sacrificial layer taking it.
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Apply one over swirled, contaminated paint and you have sealed the defects in for years. That is why the preparation is the majority of the labor and the majority of the cost:
Anyone quoting a ceramic coating in two hours is skipping the correction. That is the step being sold short.
It does: resist salt, road film, bird droppings, bug acid, UV fade and water spot etching; add gloss; make washing far faster; and last years rather than months.
It does not: make the car scratch proof. A coating adds meaningful hardness and resists light marring, but a shopping cart, a key, or a stone at highway speed still damages the paint underneath. Anybody claiming otherwise is overselling. For genuine impact protection you want paint protection film on the leading edges.
It also does not make the car self-cleaning. It gets dirty. It just releases the dirt far more easily.
Wash every two to three weeks with a pH-neutral soap and the two-bucket method. Skip automatic brush washes, which will marr the coating exactly as they marr paint. Do not use waxes or all-in-one products over the coating; they clog the surface and kill the water behavior people paid for.
If water stops beading after a year or two, that is usually road film sitting on the coating rather than the coating failing. A decontamination wash typically brings the behavior right back.
