Textured black plastic on bumpers, mirror caps, cowl panels, roof rails and wheel arch trim fades faster than any painted surface on a vehicle. UV breaks down the surface of the plastic, oils leach out, and it turns chalky grey. On a ten-year-old car with otherwise decent paint, faded trim is usually the single thing making it look old.

The distinction that matters here is between a dressing and a restoration. A dressing is a temporary oil that darkens the plastic and washes off in a few rains. A restoration is a coating that bonds and lasts a year or more.

Why the cheap approach fails

Most quick details wipe faded trim with a silicone dressing. It looks black driving off the lot, then streaks down the bumper in the first heavy rain and is grey again within a month. Worse, repeated silicone application builds a residue that makes a proper restoration harder later, because the coating cannot bond to a surface full of oil.

The other common mistake, and one that is difficult to reverse, is getting trim dressing onto adjacent paint and leaving it. It leaves a stained shadow along the panel edge.

How restoration is done

The trim is deep cleaned first, which is most of the work — all old dressing, wax residue and oxidized surface material has to come off before anything bonds. Wax that has been buffed into textured plastic and dried white is removed at this stage too, and that alone transforms how the trim looks.

Then a trim restoration coating is applied and leveled. These are typically ceramic-based or polymer products that cure onto the plastic rather than sitting on it. Expect a year or more from a proper application, versus weeks from a dressing.

Severely degraded trim — chalky enough to leave residue on your hand — sometimes needs a light abrasive step first to remove the dead surface layer before coating.

Trim, and the white wax problem

Almost every car detailed carelessly has white wax dried into the textured plastic around badges, along the cowl and in the panel gaps. It is one of the most common signs of a rushed job. It comes out with the right cleaner and a detail brush, and we remove it as part of any exterior work rather than leaving it and calling the car finished.

Trim & Plastic Restoration Questions

How long does trim restoration last?
A proper restoration coating lasts a year or more. A standard silicone dressing, which is what most quick details apply, streaks off in the first heavy rain and is grey again within a month.
Can badly faded grey plastic come back to black?
In most cases yes. Severely oxidized trim sometimes needs a light abrasive step to remove the dead chalky surface before coating, but the result on a ten-year-old bumper is usually dramatic.
Will it come off on my hands or streak onto the paint?
No. A cured coating is dry to the touch and does not run. That is the difference from oily dressings, which streak down bumpers in the rain and can stain adjacent paint.
Can you remove the white wax stuck in my trim?
Yes, and it is included in our exterior work. Dried wax in textured plastic is one of the most common signs of a rushed detail, and it comes out with the right cleaner and a detail brush.
