How to Remove Common Upholstery Stains

Different stains require opposite chemistry. Coffee is a tannin. Milk and blood are proteins and set permanently under heat. Ink is solvent-based. Grease needs a degreaser. Reaching for one all-purpose cleaner and scrubbing is why so many home attempts leave a permanent ring where there used to be a removable spot.

The first five minutes

• Blot with a clean white towel. White, so you can see what is transferring and so no dye moves from the towel to your sofa.
• Work from the outside of the stain inward, so you are not spreading it wider.
• Do not rub. Rubbing drives material deeper and abrades the fiber, which leaves a fuzzy patch that shows even after the stain is gone.
• Do not apply heat. No steam cleaner, no hair dryer. Heat sets protein permanently.
• Check the tag under the cushion before applying any liquid.

The cleaning code on the tag

Most furniture carries a manufacturer code. W means water-based cleaning is safe. S means solvent only — water will leave permanent rings on these fabrics. WS means either is acceptable. X means vacuum only, no liquid at all.

If the tag is missing or unreadable, which is common on older and imported furniture, test in a hidden spot on the back panel or under the skirt before touching the visible area.

Stain by stain

Coffee and tea. Tannin stains. Blot, then treat with a mild tannin-appropriate cleaner. Do not use bar soap or hand soap — alkaline products set tannin stains and turn them brown.

Red wine. Blot immediately. Salt genuinely helps as a first response because it absorbs liquid before it bonds. Skip the internet advice about white wine or club soda; you are mostly adding liquid to a problem made of liquid.

Milk and formula. Protein. Cool water only and an enzyme treatment. Heat here is what turns a removable spill into a permanent yellow mark and a lingering sour smell.

Ink. Solvent work, applied to a cloth and lifted rather than wiped. Wiping spreads ink into a large grey smear that is far harder to remove than the original line.

Grease and food oil. A degreaser with real dwell time. Blotting alone does very little because oil does not lift with water.

Makeup, foundation and self-tanner. Oily and pigmented at once, so they need both a solvent and a surfactant step. Extremely common on the passenger side of a sofa and on armrests.

Blood. Cold water only, never warm. Enzyme treatment afterward.

What makes a stain permanent

Three things, in order. Heat applied to protein. Time — a spill treated the same week comes out at a far higher rate than the same spill six months later, because the residue oxidizes and bonds. And previous cleaning attempts that left residue behind, which attracts dirt and creates the dark ring people mistake for the original stain.

Dye damage is a separate category entirely. Bleach, some cleaning products, hair dye and certain medications remove the color from the fabric. No cleaning restores it, and a cleaner who tells you they can is guessing.

If a spill is large, on a light-coloured sofa, or on an S-coded fabric, blot it and call rather than experimenting. Those three situations are where DIY most often turns a repairable spot into a permanent one.
